The Rise of Remote Work in Africa

Over the past five years, remote work has transformed the way professionals across the African continent approach their careers. While this shift was initially driven by the global COVID-19 pandemic, it has since taken on a life of its own, shaped by local economic realities, technological advances, and the ambitions of a young, increasingly connected workforce.

In Côte d'Ivoire, for example, cities like Abidjan and Bouaké have seen a growing number of young graduates choose freelancing and remote contracts with international companies over traditional office employment. For Aminata, a 27-year-old graphic designer based in Yopougon, the change has been life-altering. [A] "Before, I had to travel two hours every day to reach my employer's office in the Plateau district," she explains. [B] "Now I work from home, earn in euros, and spend more time with my family."

[C] However, remote work is not without its challenges. [D] Unreliable internet connections, frequent power outages, and a lack of dedicated workspace are obstacles [E] that many workers in sub-Saharan Africa continue to face. [F] A 2023 survey conducted across six West African countries found that 62% of remote workers reported connectivity issues as their primary source of frustration, compared to only 18% in Europe.

[G] Despite these hurdles, companies are beginning to adapt. [H] Co-working spaces have multiplied in major urban centres, offering reliable Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and professional environments at affordable daily rates. [I] In Abidjan alone, the number of co-working facilities grew by 40% between 2021 and 2024. Entrepreneurs like Kouamé, [J] who runs a tech startup in Cocody, now book co-working desks for his entire team three days a week. [K] "It gives us flexibility while maintaining a team culture," he says.

[L] Education systems are also beginning to respond. [M] Universities and professional training centres are increasingly offering courses in digital skills, project management tools, and virtual communication — all competencies [N] demanded by remote employers. [O] Yet experts warn that without significant investment in infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, the benefits of remote work will remain concentrated in cities, deepening existing inequalities.

The future of work in Africa is undeniably digital. Whether this transition will be inclusive or exclusionary depends largely on the decisions made today by governments, businesses, and educational institutions alike.
