In English, we use specific modal verbs to say how sure we are that something is true or will happen. These are called modals of probability (or modals of deduction). Each modal expresses a different degree of certainty, from "almost 100% sure" to "almost impossible".
| Modal | Degree of Certainty | Example |
|---|---|---|
| must | Very high (~95%) – strong positive deduction | He must be exhausted after that long flight. |
| will / 'll | Very high – confident prediction | The shop will be closed on Sunday. |
| should / ought to | High (~70%) – expectation | The package should arrive by Friday. |
| may / might / could | Medium (~40-50%) – uncertain possibility | She might know the answer. |
| may not / might not | Medium – negative possibility | He might not come to the meeting. |
| can't / couldn't | Very low (~0%) – strong negative deduction | That can't be true — I just saw her yesterday. |
