🗣️ PARTIE 1 — Speaking: Summarize a Text

Texte étudié au Jour 3 :

The Power of Strategic Reading

Reading in a foreign language can be challenging, especially when texts contain unfamiliar vocabulary and complex ideas. However, effective readers do not try to understand every single word.

Instead, they first identify the general topic and the main ideas. They may use skimming when they need to understand the overall meaning quickly. When they are looking for a specific piece of information, they use scanning.

Context is also extremely important. A reader can often understand the meaning of an unfamiliar word by looking at the words and ideas around it.

Finally, good readers pay attention not only to what the author says, but also to the author's tone and intention. Sometimes, the most important message is not stated directly.

Vous devez maintenant le résumer oralement sans lire votre texte. Présentez :

1. The main topic
2. The main idea
3. The reading strategies
4. The importance of context
5. The author's tone and intention

The Rise of Remote Work

Over the past decade, remote work has transformed from a rare perk into a mainstream way of working for millions of people worldwide. Originally embraced by tech startups looking to attract talent without geographic limits, remote work gained massive momentum during the global pandemic, when offices closed and companies were forced to adapt almost overnight.

Proponents argue that remote work offers significant benefits: employees save hours previously spent commuting, companies reduce office costs, and workers often report higher job satisfaction due to greater flexibility. Furthermore, remote work allows companies to hire talent from anywhere, rather than being limited to people who live near a physical office.

However, critics point to real challenges. Remote employees can feel isolated, spontaneous collaboration becomes harder to replicate online, and some managers struggle to maintain team culture and trust without face-to-face interaction. Additionally, not every job can be done remotely, which has created new inequalities between roles that can shift online and those that cannot.

As of today, many companies have settled on hybrid models, combining a few days in the office with the flexibility of remote work. Whether this arrangement represents a permanent shift or merely a temporary compromise remains an open question, one that will likely continue to shape the future of work for years to come.
