Learning from Mistakes

§1Making mistakes is a natural part of learning a language. However, simply making a mistake does not automatically lead to improvement. Learners need to understand why the mistake occurred and how to avoid repeating it.

§2For example, a learner may repeatedly use the wrong tense when talking about past experiences. Correcting the sentence once may not be enough. The learner should identify the grammar rule, practise it in different contexts and then use the structure in real communication.

§3Feedback plays an important role in this process. Good feedback does not simply tell learners that an answer is wrong. It helps them understand the reason behind the mistake and shows them how to improve.

§4In the long term, keeping an error log can be extremely useful. By recording repeated mistakes and their corrections, learners can identify patterns in their weaknesses and work systematically on them.

Texte à corriger

"Last year, I did many mistakes in my English writing. My teacher gived me a very good feedback, but I didn't do a real progress because I never made research about my own errors. I taked the same problem in every essay: I use very general words and I do not address the real issue in my texts. Now I want to do a change and I hope my results will be very good in the next exam."

Prêt à écouter — durée estimée : environ 1 minute.
When a teacher gives feedback, it is important to listen carefully and understand exactly what is being suggested. In this recording, a teacher explains to a student why her last essay needs revision. The teacher begins by saying that the ideas were relevant, but the vocabulary was too general in several places. She recommends the student work on replacing vague words like "very good" or "very bad" with more precise alternatives. She also mentions a recurring grammar mistake: the confusion between "do" and "make". Instead of just repeating the correction, the teacher explains the underlying rule so that the student can apply it independently next time. Finally, she encourages the student to keep an error log, noting that many successful learners have learned the hard way that recording mistakes is far more effective than simply forgetting them. The student thanks her teacher and promises to revise the essay using this feedback.

1. What does the teacher say about the essay's ideas?

2. What does the teacher recommend the student work on?

3. What recurring grammar mistake does the teacher mention?

4. Why does the teacher explain the rule instead of just giving the correction?

5. What does the teacher encourage the student to keep?

6. According to the passage, what have many successful learners learned the hard way?
