A — Comparatives : bigger than / more expensive than

Use comparatives to compare two people, things or places.

Short adjectives (1–2 syllables) : adjective + -ER + than
big → bigger than  |  tall → taller than  |  fast → faster than
old → older than  |  cheap → cheaper than
Bouaké is bigger than Daloa.
Bouaké est plus grande que Daloa.
Konan is taller than his brother.
Konan est plus grand que son frère.
Long adjectives (3+ syllables) : more + adjective + than
expensive → more expensive than  |  comfortable → more comfortable than
difficult → more difficult than  |  interesting → more interesting than
This phone is more expensive than mine.
Ce téléphone est plus cher que le mien.
English grammar is more difficult than I thought.

⚠️ Spelling rules :
• One vowel + one consonant → double the consonant : big → bigger  |  hot → hotter
• Ending in -y → change y to i : happy → happier  |  easy → easier
B — Superlatives : the best / the most expensive

Use superlatives to compare one thing with all others in a group. Always use THE.

Short adjectives : the + adjective + -EST
big → the biggest  |  tall → the tallest  |  fast → the fastest

Long adjectives : the most + adjective
expensive → the most expensive  |  difficult → the most difficult
Abidjan is the biggest city in Côte d'Ivoire.
Abidjan est la plus grande ville de Côte d'Ivoire.
This is the most expensive restaurant in the neighbourhood.
C'est le restaurant le plus cher du quartier.

C — Equality : as … as / not as … as / as much as / as many as

Use equality structures to say two things are the same or not the same.

Positive equality : as + adjective/adverb + as
→ means the two things are equal.

Negative equality : not as + adjective/adverb + as
→ means one is less than the other.
Aminata is as good as Kouamé in English.
Aminata est aussi bonne que Kouamé en anglais.
This hotel is not as expensive as the one near the airport.
Cet hôtel n'est pas aussi cher que celui près de l'aéroport.
My new car is not as fast as I expected.
Ma nouvelle voiture n'est pas aussi rapide que je l'espérais.
as much as → used with uncountable nouns or verbs
as many as → used with countable nouns
I don't earn as much as my colleague. (money — uncountable)
Je ne gagne pas autant que mon collègue.
She has as many as five brothers. (brothers — countable)
Elle a jusqu'à cinq frères.
I practise English as much as I can every day.
Je pratique l'anglais autant que possible chaque jour.
