📄 Text — "The Power of Decisions"

Every day, we face countless choices — from trivial ones like what to eat for breakfast, to life-changing decisions like which career to pursue. If we understand how our minds process decisions, we can make better choices and lead more fulfilling lives.

Psychologists distinguish between two types of thinking. System 1 is fast, automatic, and emotional. If you react immediately when someone shouts your name, that is System 1 in action. System 2, on the other hand, is slow, deliberate, and logical. If you had to solve a complex maths problem, you would use System 2 thinking — carefully working through each step.

Most people rely heavily on System 1 in daily life. This can lead to cognitive biases — patterns of thinking that cause us to make irrational decisions. If people didn't have these biases, they would weigh every option rationally. But that would be exhausting and impractical.

One well-known bias is confirmation bias — the tendency to seek information that confirms what we already believe. If a person already believes that a certain diet works, they will only look for evidence supporting that belief, ignoring any contradictory research.

Another important concept is decision fatigue. Studies show that if people make too many decisions in a row, their ability to make good choices declines significantly. This is why many successful leaders wore the same style of outfit every day — to reduce the number of minor decisions they had to make.

Experts suggest that if you simplify your daily routines and plan decisions in advance, you will preserve your mental energy for more important choices. If everyone applied these strategies, the quality of decisions worldwide would improve dramatically. The mind, like any tool, works best when used wisely.
