1) Grammar

In this lesson, students learn how to talk about food, drinks, and shopping with quantity words.

Much

Use: with uncountable nouns

  • How much water do you need?
  • How much milk is there?
  • There is not much sugar.

Many

Use: with countable plural nouns

  • How many apples do you want?
  • How many eggs are there?
  • There are many shops in town.

Some / Any

Use: for an indefinite quantity

  • I want some bread. (affirmative)
  • Do you have any rice? (question)
  • I don’t have any money. (negative)
Simple rules for A1/A2

Use much with things you cannot count one by one.
Use many with things you can count.
Use some in positive sentences.
Use any in questions and negatives.

Amina asks, “How much water do we need?” Her mother says, “We need two bottles of water and many vegetables.” They do not buy any meat because they already have some at home.
