English · Oral Expression
How to ask questions with be, do/does, and question words
1. What is a question?
Questions de baseUne question sert à demander une information. En anglais, on place souvent l’auxiliaire avant le sujet.
Basic structure :
Auxiliary verb + subject + main verb + ?
Auxiliary verb + subject + main verb + ?
Are you a student?
Es-tu étudiant ?
Do you like English?
Aimes-tu l’anglais ?
💡 Tip : En anglais, le point d’interrogation est obligatoire à la fin de la question.
2. Questions with Be
Am / Is / Are
Be + subject + complement ?
Are you ready? / Is she at home? / Am I late?
Are you ready? / Is she at home? / Am I late?
Are you happy today?
Es-tu heureux aujourd’hui ?
Is he your teacher?
Est-il ton professeur ?
Are they in the classroom?
Sont-ils dans la classe ?
⚠️ Common mistake : On ne dit pas You are happy? pour une question directe. On dit
Are you happy?
3. Questions with Do / Does
Présent simple
Do / Does + subject + base verb ?
Do you play football? / Does she speak English?
Do you play football? / Does she speak English?
Do you live in Bouaké?
Vis-tu à Bouaké ?
Does he work here?
Travaille-t-il ici ?
Do they know the answer?
Connaissent-ils la réponse ?
💡 Key idea : Avec does, le verbe principal reste à la forme de base.
On dit Does she like coffee? et non Does she likes coffee?
