1. What Are Prepositions of Time & Place?

Prepositions are small but powerful words that show the relationship between nouns and time or place. The three most important are AT, IN and ON — but English has many others that are equally essential.

Key question for TIME: When does it happen?
Key question for PLACE: Where is it / does it happen?

PART A — PREPOSITIONS OF TIME

2. AT / IN / ON — The Time Pyramid

Think of AT, IN, ON as a pyramid going from the most specific (small/precise) to the most general (large/broad).

AT — Most specific — exact time/point
ON — Medium — days & dates
IN — Most general — months, years, seasons

3. AT — Exact Times & Special Expressions

AT + clock time: at 7am · at noon · at midnight · at 3:30pm — "The meeting starts at 9am."
AT + special expressions: at night · at the weekend · at Christmas · at Easter · at the moment — "I study at night."
AT + mealtimes: at breakfast · at lunch · at dinner — "We discussed it at lunch."

The class starts at 8am and finishes at noon. (Le cours commence à 8h et se termine à midi.)
I always relax at the weekend. (Je me détends toujours le week-end.)

4. ON — Days & Dates

ON + days: on Monday · on Tuesday · on Fridays (regular) — "She has class on Thursday."
ON + dates: on 1st January · on 25 December · on my birthday — "It happened on 4th August."
ON + day + time: on Monday morning · on Friday evening · on Sunday night — "We meet on Monday mornings."

Kouamé goes to the mosque on Fridays. (Kouamé va à la mosquée le vendredi.)
She was born on 14th March 2001. (Elle est née le 14 mars 2001.)

5. IN — Months, Years, Seasons & Long Periods

IN + months: in January · in March · in August — "The BAC is in June."
IN + years: in 2024 · in 1960 · in the 1990s — "Côte d'Ivoire gained independence in 1960."
IN + seasons: in spring · in summer · in the dry season — "It rains a lot in the rainy season."
IN + parts of day: in the morning · in the afternoon · in the evening — "She jogs in the morning."
IN + duration (future): in ten minutes · in two hours · in a week — "I'll be ready in five minutes."
IN + long periods: in the past · in the future · in the 20th century — "Life was different in the past."

Aminata was born in 2004, in March, in the morning. (Aminata est née en 2004, en mars, le matin.)

8. AT / IN / ON — Prepositions of Place

AT — a point/specific location/address: at the bus stop · at the door · at school · at work · at home · at 14 Rue des Fleurs — "Meet me at the market entrance."
IN — inside an enclosed space/area/city/country: in the room · in Abidjan · in Côte d'Ivoire · in Africa · in the car · in the box — "She lives in Yopougon, in Abidjan."
ON — a surface/a street name/public transport: on the table · on the wall · on the floor · on Boulevard de la République · on the bus · on the plane — "The keys are on the table."

She is at the hospital right now. She works in the emergency department. (Elle est à l'hôpital en ce moment. Elle travaille aux urgences.)
Leave your bag on the chair in the corner at the back of the room. (Laisse ton sac sur la chaise dans le coin au fond de la salle.)

B: Yes, but only in the morning — from 8am to 1pm. Make sure you get there before noon at the latest.

11. Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ I will see you on 8 o'clock. → ✅ I will see you at 8 o'clock. (Use AT for exact clock times, never ON or IN.)
❌ She was born in Monday. → ✅ She was born on Monday. / She was born in 1998. (Use ON for days, IN for years and months.)
❌ I'll meet you on the restaurant. → ✅ I'll meet you at the restaurant. (AT = a specific meeting point/location. ON = a surface. IN = inside an enclosed space.)
❌ I studied during two hours. → ✅ I studied for two hours. (FOR + duration. DURING + named period.)
❌ I haven't seen her since three years. → ✅ I haven't seen her for three years. (FOR + duration. SINCE + specific point in time.)
