Marie's First Business Trip Abroad

When Marie was asked to represent her company at an international conference in London, she felt both excited and nervous. She had studied English for years, but she knew that using natural expressions would make all the difference when networking with native speakers.

During the opening reception, she decided to break the ice by asking a colleague about his flight. To be honest, she had prepared a few idioms in advance, hoping they would help her sound more confident. When someone asked about her company's recent restructuring, she calmly replied that it was, admittedly, a lot to take in, but that the team was in the same boat and supporting each other.

Later, during a panel discussion, one of the speakers mentioned that a competitor had bitten off more than they could chew by expanding too quickly into new markets. Marie made a mental note of the expression, planning to use it herself in future conversations.

By the end of the first day, Marie realised that speaking a language fluently isn't only about grammar — it's about understanding the small phrases that native speakers use without even thinking. Long story short, she left the conference with a notebook full of new expressions and a much stronger sense of confidence.

Looking back, Marie couldn't agree more that idioms are like small keys: each one opens a door to sounding a little more natural.
