Most language learners spend years memorising individual words, yet many still struggle to sound natural when they finally speak. Linguists increasingly agree that the real building blocks of fluent speech are not single words but "chunks" — fixed or semi-fixed combinations such as idioms, phrasal verbs, and collocations.

Consider the difference between knowing the words "make," "decision," and "attention" separately, and instantly knowing that native speakers say "make a decision" and "pay attention," never the reverse. This kind of knowledge cannot be built through vocabulary lists alone; it requires repeated exposure to real, connected language.

Research on second-language acquisition suggests that learners who focus on chunks from early on tend to develop fluency faster than those who focus purely on grammar rules and isolated vocabulary. This is partly because chunks reduce the mental effort needed during real-time conversation. Together, they form what some researchers call a speaker's "phraseological competence" — arguably just as important as grammatical accuracy for anyone aiming for a genuinely advanced level.

For learners preparing for B2 and beyond, the practical implication is clear: rather than only memorising more individual words, it pays to notice, collect, and actively reuse complete expressions encountered in reading, listening, and everyday conversation.
