Should Social Media Be Regulated by Governments?

In recent years, social media platforms have become central to how people communicate, share information, and form opinions. This essay argues that stronger government regulation of social media is necessary to protect users, particularly young people, from harmful content and misinformation.

Firstly, social media companies have repeatedly failed to control the spread of false information on their platforms. Furthermore, algorithms designed to maximise engagement often promote sensational or misleading content, since this type of material tends to generate more clicks. As a result, users are frequently exposed to inaccurate information without realising it.

Secondly, the mental health of young users is increasingly at risk. Studies have shown a correlation between heavy social media use and rising rates of anxiety and depression among teenagers. However, platforms have been slow to introduce meaningful safeguards, despite public pressure to do so.

Opponents of regulation argue that government intervention could threaten freedom of expression. Although this concern is valid, it does not justify complete inaction. Reasonable regulation, such as requiring transparency about algorithms and enforcing age verification, would not silence legitimate speech; it would simply hold companies accountable for the platforms they design.

In conclusion, while social media offers genuine benefits for communication and connection, the risks it poses to public discourse and mental health cannot be ignored. Therefore, thoughtful government regulation represents a necessary step toward a safer digital environment.

University education plays a central role in shaping a person's career and future opportunities. This essay argues that university education should be free, as it would create a fairer and more prosperous society.

Firstly, free university education would give equal opportunities to students regardless of their financial background. Furthermore, many talented students currently cannot afford higher education, which means their potential is wasted. As a result, society loses valuable skills and innovation that these students could have contributed.

Secondly, countries with free higher education, such as Germany, have shown that this model can produce highly skilled workforces. However, critics argue that free education would place too much pressure on national budgets. Although this concern is reasonable, governments could offset the cost through higher taxes on large corporations that directly benefit from an educated workforce.

In conclusion, while funding remains a valid concern, the long-term benefits of free university education, for individuals and for society, clearly outweigh the costs. Therefore, governments should invest in accessible higher education for all.
