The Hidden Skill of Reading Between the Lines
Every text carries two layers of meaning: what is written, and what is implied. Skilled readers learn to notice both. A journalist who writes "the company remained silent on the allegations" is not simply describing an absence of comment, they are subtly suggesting that the silence itself is meaningful.
This ability to detect implication develops gradually, often without conscious effort, as a reader is exposed to more varied texts. Advertisements, political speeches, and news articles all rely heavily on implication rather than direct statement, since readers tend to trust conclusions they reach themselves more than ones they are simply told.
Consequently, one of the most valuable habits a careful reader can develop is pausing occasionally to ask: what is the author really trying to make me think, beyond the literal words on the page? This single question, applied consistently, transforms a passive reader into an active, critical one.
Write a short summary (100–120 words) of the text above, focusing on the main idea and the author's key point about implication.
