Reading Comprehension + Writing Activity
Every Saturday morning, thousands of people across the country head to their local farmer's market instead of the supermarket. Why? Because buying fresh food directly from producers is not only healthier — it can actually save you money too.
At a typical market, you will find stalls selling everything from seasonal, locally-grown vegetables to freshly baked bread, handmade cheeses, and artisan cured meats. Unlike a supermarket where products come in plastic packaging, market sellers usually let you pick exactly the quantity you need — no waste, no unnecessary plastic.
Shopping at a market also requires different skills than online grocery shopping. You need to examine the products carefully — check if the fruit is ripe but not overripe, smell the bread to know if it is fresh, and compare prices between stalls before making a purchase. Experienced shoppers always bring their own reusable bag or basket and a list to avoid impulse buying.
One useful tip: arrive early. The best produce — the freshest strawberries, the rarest cheeses — sells out quickly. Vendors are also more willing to offer a small discount at the end of the day to avoid carrying unsold goods home.
Whether you are on a tight budget or simply looking for high-quality food, the market offers an experience that no supermarket can replicate: real conversation, genuine local produce, and the simple pleasure of choosing your own food.
Part B: Write a short dialogue (4 lines) between you and a market vendor asking for one of the items and negotiating the price.
Review your teacher's feedback on the writing tasks, and use the vocabulary from the reading to improve your answers. Great work practising your English today!
