Le Past Continuous décrit une action en déroulement à un moment du passé.

Une action qui était en train de se dérouler à un instant donné dans le passé.
At 8 pm, she was studying for her exam.
Interruption par une action soudaine
Une action longue (past continuous) interrompue par une action courte (simple past).
I was reading when the phone rang.
Deux actions simultanées
Deux actions qui se déroulaient en même temps dans le passé, reliées par while.
While he was cooking, she was setting the table.
Contexte narratif / décor
Planter le décor d'une histoire ou décrire l'ambiance d'un récit au passé.
The sun was setting and birds were singing when she arrived.
